Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch
In a time when Route 66 is littered with quirky tourist traps that try to lure motorists in with their kitschy wares,Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch stands alone as a testament to one man’s passion project. Located in Oro Grande,California,the forest of bottle trees and vintage items draws visitors from near and far.
Elmer Long was a young boy when he went camping with his dad in the desert. They would search old dumps to find glass bottles. After his father died,Long inherited the collection and began to create bottle trees.
Now over 200 “trees” later,each topped with a unique piece of memorabilia,the Bottle Tree Ranch is truly one-of-a-kind. Elmer died in 2019 but his son still manages the ranch. The ranch is open sunrise to sunset and there is no entry fee. The sound of metal on glass and old-fashioned road signs contribute to the tranquil atmosphere in this off-the beaten path roadside attraction.
Victorville Community Market
Victorville is home to a number of popular dining,shopping and entertainment destinations. The Mall of Victor Valley,the town’s largest shopping center,features Macy’s and JCPenney as well as Barnes and Noble and Dick’s Sporting Goods. Victoria’s Secret is also located there. Sprouts opened its doors in Victorville last year,a grocery store that was highly anticipated.
The High Desert Farmers Market was started by Kerri Santoro in 1992 while she was an Agricultural student at Victor Valley College. She was appointed President of the College’s Ornamental Horticulture Club for her top grades,and saw the need to create a local farmers market that would connect the community to the food it eats.
Every Thursday,rain or shine,the Market is located on the lower campus at Victor Valley College (18422 Bear Valley Road),in front of both the tennis courts and gym. The Market is licensed to accept SNAP,aka “food stamps,” and EBT and also senior WIC benefits. The Market does not sell weapons or other items that are inappropriate for a family-oriented venue. Only local produce,crafts and handmade products will be accepted.
